My mum sent me and my sister cardigans when it was time to leave Jamaica, but I gave them to my aunt.

I wore a short sleeve fancy little dress to travel in.

When I got to the airport, I saw the sea on either side, so I thought I would have to walk in the sea!

My family came to say goodbye and I was walking backwards, I didn’t want to go, I didn’t want to leave my grandmother, but my Grandmother said: ‘You need to go on the airplane now’

On the plane, a freckled face, ginger haired boy gave us some Maltesers.

I felt a bit sick on the plane, and it was freezing, but they gave us some blankets. We were looked after by the air hostess.

Arrival

When we got to England, it was cold! My father brought me and my sister a nice coat.

We looked around and asked; ‘Where are we? Is it all smoke and factories here? But dad explained it was because all the houses were attached (terraced) and everyone had their own coal fire.

We got to our house in Earlham Grove. I met four of my brothers and my cousins. We lived in the top half and my cousin on the bottom.

There were 11 of us in total.  On Monday it was cold, on Tuesday it snowed! I loved the snow. I still do, even now. ar.

Contribution to Newham

I was a nurse for many years. When I retired I wanted to give back to Newham.

So I decided to help out at the Hibiscus Community Centre for the elderly.

I talk to them about health, could take their blood pressure, and play games with them like dominoes.

I love helping out and I love living in Newham.

This project has been commissioned by Culture Within Newham and funded by Arts Council England.
