About JaZanne Arts

Hi and a warm welcome to JaZanne’s website.

In 2016 a telephone conversation took place between Jacqui and Annie, we shared stories about the challenges facing the young people and adults we were working with, One particular child was witnessing domestic violence at home and was suffering mental health issues, another with a similar experience was managing to thrive. One older person was focusing on their aches, pains and isolation, another was ‘getting the very best out of every moment’ so what was the difference? We talked about the importance of developing resilience across generations and how we could use the power of the arts to improve lives – it was then that JaZanne was born.

JaZanne has been established since 2016 by Jacqui Livingston and Annie Smol. We have 30 years of experience working passionately within the arts and education to motivate, enthuse and inspire young and older people. This is our journey…

In 1987 we met at Chats Palace Arts Centre – we worked together in community arts in Hackney with disadvantaged young people and adults creating plays and musicals.

In 1990 we created ‘MixCO’ and created arts programmes for older people and for children including shows, workshops and holiday clubs.

From 1993- 2016 Annie focussed on theatre directing and community arts whilst Jacqui went into education, but we still managed to perform together and deliver creative projects when possible.

In 2016 JaZanne was born…

Annie Smol  MBE

I have worked within the arts in education, health and social care for 30 years specialising in inclusion, forum theatre and community arts.  I’ve worked for numerous arts and theatre companies and am a founder member of the Theatre in schools Partnership. I was a founder and Artistic Director of Face Front Inclusive Theatre  for the last 16 years where I created many successful theatre programmes for children and older people working as a project manager, director, trainer and performer.  In 2017 I received an MBE for services to theatre and inclusion through drama. I am now on the pathway for JaZanne.

Jacqui Livingston

30 years ago I was working in community arts as a facilitator and performer before I moved into education. I am a former Head of School and have been in education for the last 23 years.  Throughout this time I have managed a range of subject areas including, teaching and learning, curriculum, creative arts, philosophy for children, phonics and drama.  In addition, I have led in all key stages including early years and have provided CPD training across the school staff team, including senior management.  I am now on the pathway for Jazanne.

Between us we have worked creatively with thousands of young people ranging from early years to secondary and with older people across London.

We are passionate about developing resilience in children, young and older people and believe that this can be achieved through drama, music and storytelling.
